Happy Robot Steampunk Dress

A Party Dress For The Future Or The Past

This dress is cut in a simple, flattering shape – fitted on the top, flared out from the waist into a full circle skirt in two layers. The outer layer of the dress is made from soft cotton printed with a whole array of happy cartoon robots (and their pets).

Genuine brass rivets run down the length of all the seams on both the bodice and skirt, as well as along the hem of the longer layer. All together there are over 450 rivets on the dress! The skirt part of the robot layer ends between the knee and mid-thigh. Both sides feature concealed taffeta hip pockets. Four rivets down the centre front create small pleats for a gentle 1950’s style sweetheart bust.

The longer, under skirt (which makes up part of the lining) is also a full circle with a wavy hem and falls just below the knee. It is made with a shiny golden/bronze crushed taffeta that is super swishy when you walk – or dance & twirl ;-)

This same taffeta is also used to make the straps, which can be worn in a few different ways. They can be added or removed by threading them through the attached pairs of D-rings. Attach just the front two straps for a halter-neck style, or attach the back two as well and tie them in a bow over the shoulders. The upper bodice is lined with 100% cotton so it is comfy against your skin. There is also a light interlining and Rigilene (plastic boning) on all the panel lines so you can remove all the straps and wear it is a strapless design without worrying about it losing its shape.

The two cog/gear shaped rosettes have broach backs and are movable. The belt is also detachable, so you can chose the look or mix & match. Both are made from metallic copper coloured leatherette threaded through with brown velvet ribbon, vintage lace, brass eyelets, chain, rivets and split rings. The buckles are mixed metal with an antiqued brass finish.

The dress opens down the left side-seam with a white invisible zipper that extends from the top of the bodice to just below the waist.

Construction

Outer Fabric: 100% cotton with printed robot design.

Lining (fully lined, loose at the hem): Upper bodice – 100% plainweave cotton in chocolate brown, skirt – 100% nylon crushed taffeta in golden/bronze.

Measurements

The dress has finished measurements of 97.8cm around the bust and 77.4cm at the waist. It looks best when it fits closely, so I’d say someone with measurements only slightly smaller than those of the actual dress would fit it well. It flares out into a full circle from the waist down and so is basically free-sized around the hips. The hem sits just below the knee on someone about 5’6”/167cm tall.

Washing / Garment care

Please note that this is not the type of garment you will be able to just throw in the washing machine. If you really needed to wash it like that you could probably get away with it a few times but I would strongly recommend specialist cleaning if it is to last.
